To mark the 60th anniversary of Hans J. Wegner’s iconic Shell Chair, Carl Hansen & Søn launches the chair with an anniversary version in rosewood and oak.
The Shell Chair was first presented on 20 September 1963 at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen. However, it took another 35 years for the chair to achieve its current level of popularity and recognition. This only serves to underline the visionary quality of Wegner as a designer. In 2023, Carl Hansen & Søn celebrates the Shell Chair’s 60th anniversary with an exclusive edition made of rosewood and oak, available with or without a seat upholstered in black, matt aniline leather (Luna Carbon).
A small brass plate engraved with Wegner’s signature and design year is mounted to the back of the chair. This special edition will only be available from October 2nd to December 31, 2023.
The Shell Chair is characterized by a strong design language with high comfort. The chair’s soft lines and organic shapes also demonstrate Wegner’s knowledge of both the potential and challenges of wood. To add stability to the three-legged chair, Wegner developed a distinctive double frame that is equally beautiful from all angles.
Unlike the regular Shell Chair, this anniversary edition comes with upholstery on the seat only, adding additional visibility to the characteristic grain of the FSCTM-certified Santos rosewood. The legs are made from FSC-certified oak and the chair is furnished with or without Danish SPOOR traceable aniline leather. SPOOR traceable leather means that every piece of leather can be traced on to single individual hides and the specific animal. Thereby we secure transparent and responsible sourcing on both the wood and upholstery.
